CHARACTER (CONT'D)

DubScript on tablets

Hello there, me again

I have a scene where a character is giving a monologue, then we cut to another scene where that character is talking again, and Dubscript reader automatically formats the script to CHARACTER (CONT'D). But I don't want this, as it's not a continuation.

Is there a way to turn this off please?

Thanks!!

Yes!

You can turn it of in the settings-- turn off "Auto-Add (CONT'D)" in the "Reader" setting.

The "CONT'D"s should be reset though from scene to scene. Are you seeing it continue between scenes (ie, when there are new sluglines?)

ah brilliant!

The problem was that because I was double-asterisking my slug-lines to make them bold Reader wasn't recognising them as sluglines.

So an option in the preferences to make sluglines bold would be amazing!

Thanks

Ah cool-- a quick note that

Ah cool-- a quick note that you can force any line to be a slug-line by adding a period (.) at the beginning. So you could both bold a slugline AND let DubScript know it's definitely a slugline with the period.

I'll look at adding a "make sluglines bold" pref-- will probably add transitions to that option as they usually get bolded together (ie, "CUT TO:")..

Thanks for the feedback!

So the "make sluglines bold"

So the "make sluglines bold" setting is now added to the code. Look for it to come to the beta hopefully soon, so if you're not signed up for that yet, you can do so here.

Hi Ron. That works.
I do however have a small issue with it.
Directly after some sluglines I have a note for sound effect reading something like this...

INT. BEDROOM - DAY
*SFX- Alarm clock*

WHen I do this it won't see the slugline as a slugline and won't bold it - even if I put a . a before it. I have to resort to my old method of .**INT. BEDROOM - DAY** to get it to work.

It works okay if I add a line between the slugline and the SFX line but I'd rather not do this as it creates too much empty space in the script.

Thanks

Oh hey

To follow Fountain's syntax, you're supposed to have a blank line both before and after the slugline. Also this is the standard screenplay format-- it's generally expected to see an empty line before and after the scene heading.

That said, I'm certainly in favor of breaking all standards and rules for formatting-- these touches sometimes make the script standout from the pack-- but for a general-purpose screenwriting app, it's difficult to make it compatible with the Fountain markup standard AND be able to handle cases that want to deviate from the standard... Boy it was hard enough to get the parser, layout, pagination, etc working just with the standard as it exists! Phew.

I'm very happy to read you found a workaround tho!

Ways to send the file...

Here are a few ways to send the script-

1. Copy/paste from DubScript's editor to another app such as Google Docs or Gmail.
2. Use the "Share..." menu option (in the DubScript's Write screen) to send the script using another app such as Gmail or Google Drive. If you use the latter, you'd send a link to the GDrive location.
3. Use any 3rd party app directly, from an email program to an FTP app to Dropbox to Google Drive, to attach the file (either as a .fountain file or a .pdf or whatever)
4. Android's file manager (sometimes called "Files") may be used to select a script file and then open/handle it with another app such as an email program or chat program (Signal, perhaps) to forward the script to someone else.

Hope one of these methods works for ya!
