The evidence is in: Use TWO spaces after a period in monospace screenplay fonts such as Courier Prime!

There's a "common knowledge" floating around that one can deduce the approximate generation of a screenwriter based on whether they use one or two spaces after a period: Older writers who learned to type on manual typewriters usually add two spaces, and younger writers who learned on a word processors with proportional fonts use only one space and let the software manage the spacing width.

This week the Washington Post had an article discussing the classic, controversial 1-vs-2 spaces controversy. Suprisingly (at least to me), of 60 college students recruited for the study, 21 were "two-spacers". But there's more. From the article:

The researchers then clamped each student's head into place, and used an Eyelink 1000 to record where they looked as they silently read 20 paragraphs. The paragraphs were written in various styles: one-spaced, two-spaced, and strange combinations like two spaces after commas, but only one after periods. And vice versa, too.

And the verdict was: two spaces after the period is better.

Welcome 2018 with fonts, fonts, and more fonts!

As seen in RC36:

I can post these all day. But why post screen shots when you can try it yourself? There are over eight hundred downloadable writing fonts families and three new font sizes to choose from. All for the perfectly reasonable price of free. And you can play with them in the DubScript testing version, starting in six months right now. Just sign up for the beta program in the Play Store.

If you encounter any issues with this new experimental feature or with anything else in this version of DubScript please do post to the forum. Cheers and as always, happy writing!

RC34 Moves to Beta Testing!

Among the usual updated libraries and bug fixes in this beta are two items of note that came directly from you:

1. Auto scene-renumber and remove all scene numbering, based on this forum suggestion from Luca9185.

2. A very rare formatting issue with characters whose name ends in "2", as noticed by Triston in this conversation in the forum.

Thanks to both of you! The current beta has a couple more tricks up its sleeve as far as speed and memory usage go, so be sure to try the latest by adding yourself as a beta tester in the play store. And if you notice any issues, post 'em in the forum. Thanks and happy writing!

DubScript RC25 Now In Beta

This is a very minor update. Just some new Google Libraries for the "O" release of Android and other minor things. If there are bugs that related to the Google code, this will hopefully address them.

Since so little has changed, this will likely only be in beta for a day or two, then move to production. Unless, that is, any big issues are reported.

RC24 Moves Out of Beta to Release Channel (100%)

After several months of testing, RC24 is slowly moving into the production release. Among the changes:

✓ New! Compare Scripts - view changes between drafts
✓ Updated multiwindow & Chromebook support (note: use ctrl-1 instead of alt-1 to flip screens)
✓ Android "O" support w/newest libraries
✓ More fit & finish/speed
✓ Fixed bugs

It's currently going to 10% of users, and if there are no immediate problems, it'll expand more.

Update 7/8: No issues reported, so moved to 20% of users.
Update 7/9: No issues reported, so moving to 50% of users.
Update 7/11: No issues reported thusfar, so finishing the update to 100%. All users should get this update, and any new issues reported at this point will have to appear in the next release.

1.0 RC23 Heads To Beta!

After two months, a new build has just hit the Beta Channel! It has exciting improvements including

✓ New! Compare Scripts - view changes between drafts!
✓ More fit & finish
✓ Uses less memory
✓ Fixed many bugs
✓ Built with latest tools & libraries

Hopefully this will address the rare issue described in this thread which occurred in some unusual configurations. Other bugs were hopefully squashed, so if you've experienced any issues lately, give the beta a shot.

Happy Writing!

RC12 -- Gradual Rollout to Production

So with no bug reports from the beta channel over the last few days, RC12 is going to start making its way to the main distribution production channel... starting with 5% of the users.

This is the first major non-testing production update in over a year, so the rollout is being done carefully-- slowly and incrementally.

If there are still no problems reported, RC12 will be expanded to more published users until 100% is reached.

Update Jan 3 -- No issues reported, so rolling out to 10% of users.
Update Jan 5 -- No issues or crashes reported... will roll out to 20% at end of day.
Update Jan 7-- Amazing-- there hasn't been a single crash report (yet). Maybe pushing our luck here, but if there are still no problems we'll will go to a 50% rollout! (Update to update: We're at 50%!)
Update Jan 12-- Although there are to-date no crash reports yet, there has been a single report of an issue in the review section on the Play Store. The person was invited to explain the problem further in the forum for more analysis, help, and hopefully a resolution, but so far no response. If they don't show up up in the next day or so, the assumption will be they resolved the problem themselves, and we'll move the rollout up to 100%, as this was the only report of any problem on any device so far.
Update Jan 13-- No further word from this one user. Thousands of people have already migrated to the new version without any reported crashes, so if nothing new is reported in the next few hours, we'll go to 100% tomorrow.
Update Jan 15-- It's been six days without any further response from the user, and zero other reports of bugs or crashes. So Time to go to 100%!!

Enjoy and Happy New Year!

Quick RC12... better pagination...

RC12 is the same as RC11 with the sole exception of

+ a patch that improves page break detection on dialogue.

See, normally, a page is broken along long dialogue blocks at the end of a sentence, but the paginator was being thrown on words like "Mr." and "Ms." and "Dr." which look grammatically like they may be end of sentences, but are actually abbreviations. So hopefully for most cases, the page won't break.

Please report any bugs to the forum!!

What's new in RC11

Another week, a new RC. This one has only some minor improvements.

Here's what's in the very latest:

* Newer support libraries from Google
* Improved pagination w/dual-dialog
* Some optimizations to code and UI layouts

Find issues? Post them to the the forum!

RC10 Standing By...

RC10 is on its way to the beta channel... here's what's new in this version.

+ Added a new "watermark" feature. This should be supported on Android 5.0+. A watermark is a way to visually designate a PDF of your screenplay as having been created for a particular person. To use this, just go to the settings and under "General", select the "Watermark" option and type in some text. It should appear in a light grey diagonally across every page. Note this feature is only available to-- everyone-- subscribers or not. All the DubScript features are free :)
+ Major fixes to pagination for PDFs. Dialogue breaking is smarter... and more.
+ Now when you search, if you're on a hard keyboard, you can type ENTER/RETURN on the keyboard instead of having to press the "Find" or "Search" button.
+ Slight optimizations here and there. Minor bug fixes.
+ More compatibility stuff for Nougat 7.1
+ Built with the new "Jack" system using Java 1.8 instead of 1.7. This may not have much of a benefit to the final product, but then again, who knows?
+ New libraries and build tools. As improvements come from Google, DubScript incorporates them.

Be sure to read older messages to learn what's been added since the official release version (RC2): Please report any new issues discovered to The Forum. Thanks and enjoy!
